When the name of your band is fun. (period, yes, period) you’ve got a lot to live up to when you play a show. On Friday night I was super excited to see and have Fun when they performed alongside Steel Train at World Cafe Live in Philly. And now enough of the “fun” jokes.
I was first introduced to fun. by my boyfriend who is very cute and made me a mixed CD to show me how much he liked me in those early days. He put their song “Light a Roman Candle” on there, it became our song and my love affair with Fun began. The group is headed by Nate Reuss, formally of another of my favorite groups, The Format. They have the same indie pop vibe as The Format and Nate’s voice is just too unique to be ignored. The lead guitarist is Jack Antonoff of Steel Train so going to see this concert was quite an obvious choice. And also for the fact that Fun’s debut album Aim and Ignite is a perfect dance-in-your-car blend of instruments, unique vocals, and quirky lyrics. It reminds me of a cooler, hipster version of my dad’s music from the 70s, like Yes or ELO.
The venue was perfect for the concert, including a delicious cup of Yards’ Philly Pale Ale, and the crowd contained just enough skinny jeans, bedhead and thick rimmed glasses to be a scene. While the opener was decent, as soon as Steel Train came out, the party started. Definitely planning on checking them out more. Here are a few of my pictures of Steel Train and Fun, taken with my beat-up old digital camera:
Such an amazing and, yes, FUN concert to go to. Check out their CD Aim and Ignite and check fun and Steel Train out as they head out on their fall tour!
