Even though I’ve lived in New Jersey practically my entire life, I always forget about spring. There’s this fantasy of leaves on the trees, fresh blooms all over, and idyllic sunny days. My mind is all like, pull out the sundresses and t-shirts! Mother Nature, on the other hand, says not so fast. Sure, there are buds here and there. Our lawn is mostly green. But the weather is all over the place. Last week I was walking the Asbury Park boardwalk. This morning I left the house in my wool coat. Spring time in New Jersey is nowhere near ideal. Which is why there are no rules for spring dressing. Instead I’m keeping my spring look more practical with a comfortable thermal top and ripped jeans.
What I love about this outfit is that it doesn’t apply to the rules of spring. Spring outfits usually are flowers, pastels, and skirts. As much as I love those three things, that’s not my weekend style. At least not since we bought our house! You’re more likely to find me strolling the aisles of Lowe’s than sipping a lemonade at a cute café (which is what I assume you do in a pretty spring outfit). Spring weekends are about getting things done and you need clothing pieces that are not just pretty but useful. If you haven’t already, invest in a pair of slip-on sneakers. The ones I’m wearing were an add-on to a J.Crew Factory order. They made it in the cart because they look cute but also practical. When they came in the mail, I slipped them on and haven’t looked back since. They’re slightly more dressy than sneakers and the white sole and black uppers make them simple enough to go with anything. Target has some beautiful pairs (including this to die for blush pair!) so you know they’re going to be everywhere this season.
Have I ever mentioned how much I love this thermal top and all thermal tops? They are the perfect balance of comfort, texture, and warmth. This draped Free people top was an amazing thredup find, at a quarter of the price they’re currently selling for. This is why my love for thredup will never die! Just a quick tip for using thredup and other secondhand sites: while they try to stay on top of the seasons, you can score major deals shopping for off-season items to add to your closet.
When April’s weather is this all over the place, there are no rules for how to dress this spring. My go-to looks will be comfortable and ready for anything. What are your go-to pieces for this crazy spring weather?
